What Is an Indoor Wood Cookstove?

An indoor cookstove isn’t your average kitchen appliance. It’s a versatile heating and cooking system that combines a traditional cooking range with a wood heating stove. Unlike standard kitchen appliances that rely on electricity or gas to function, a wood stove with an oven is fueled solely by wood, making them an eco-friendly and self-sufficient choice when properly installed.

The HECO wood cookstoves we sell are known for their classic, vintage-style appeal, and feature efficient heating mechanisms, precise temperature controls, and durable materials. Rest assured, whatever vision you have in mind, we’re certain we can bring it to life in your home.

What can a multifunctional wood-burning stove actually cook? Most models are built to accommodate baking, roasting, boiling, and even grilling – a full-service solution for any home cooking need.

If you’re looking for an off-the-grid food cooking option, our wood cooking stoves might be the perfect fit. Need more details? We’re here to help. Call or reach out to us online now.

Why Use an Indoor Wood Cookstove?

Why might a homeowner opt for a cookstove in addition to their more common kitchen appliances?

  • They’re dual purpose. Wood cookstoves provide a place to cook and prepare food, while heating your home at the same time.
  • They can help lower energy costs. Because they’re a two-for-one system, you won’t waste energy running both your kitchen stove and furnace – turn them both off and turn to your cookstove.
  • They allow for energy independence. Because they operate without relying on electricity or gas, they’re ideal for off-grid living or power outages.
  • They use a renewable resource. Wood is renewable, which means burning it will reduce your carbon footprint compared to gas or electric appliances – and you won’t be running out of fuel any time soon.
  • They offer versatile cooking options. Most cookstoves work great for baking, boiling, roasting, simmering, grilling…the list goes on. You’ll have a range of culinary possibilities.
  • They provide a more traditional ambiance. Cookstoves add a rustic, classic charm to any home – and will quickly become a well-loved focal point in your space.
  • They’re durable and long-lasting. Because cookstoves are built with heavy-duty materials like cast iron and steel, they guarantee decades of reliable use when properly maintained.

If you’re on the hunt for a wood cookstove or a cast iron wood stove with an oven, we’ve got you covered.

How Do I Maintain My Indoor Cookstove?

An indoor cookstove can be a long-lasting and beneficial addition to your home, but to ensure its longevity, you’ll need to properly maintain it.

  • Book annual chimney inspections. All wood stoves – whether they have cooking capabilities or not – need annual inspections and sweepings performed.
  • Regularly remove wood ash. Empty the ash pan or firebox daily (or as needed) to prevent buildup that can reduce efficiency or invite in moisture.
  • Do personal check-ups. Homeowner inspections can never replace one completed by a certified tech, but it’s still good to keep an eye for damage or inefficiencies – and call us if you spot problems.
  • Polish the exterior. Use stove polish or a soft cloth to maintain the finish on cast iron or steel surfaces, ensuring they stay rust-free.
  • Don’t put off repair work. If you do notice damage (or learn of issues from a professional inspection), don’t wait to book professional chimney repair services.
  • Use proper wood fuel. Burn only seasoned wood – no green/wet wood, trash, treated wood, cardboard, paper products, or anything else, as these increase creosote accumulation.

Can a Wood Cookstove Help Heat My Home?

Yes – that’s a big reason why homeowners find these appliances to be such great additions. Being a dual-purpose appliance, wood cookstoves can both heat your home and help at mealtime, saving you energy and money.

How efficient are wood cookstoves at heating? They definitely deliver! They’re specifically designed to radiate heat from their surface into the surrounding space – meaning as you cook, the stove’s firebox generates warmth that spreads throughout the room.

Can cookstoves heat your entire living space? It depends on the space you’re heating and the size of the stove. Here are some things to consider:

  • Larger cookstove models are powerful enough to heat small to medium-sized homes, especially if the home has an open floor plan and/or good airflow management.
  • Smaller cookstoves can be a great source of supplemental heat or used for zone heating, still providing some cost savings during the colder months.
  • Strategically placed cookstoves, no matter the size, can provide heat in the areas of the home that are most used, allowing you to turn down your thermostat everywhere else.

What Type of Wood Should I Use in My Cookstove?

Many don’t realize it, but the type of wood you burn truly matters – both for how well your fires burn and for the overall condition of the stove and its venting components.

So, what wood is best for burning in your wood stove or cookstove? The most important thing is that the wood is properly seasoned. Seasoned wood consists of logs that have been left to dry for long enough that their moisture levels reach around 15-20% – usually around a 6-month process.

Never burn wet wood, treated wood, painted wood, garbage, or anything other than seasoned wood. This is especially important for a cookstove, since these products can release toxins that not only damage your stove, but can get into your air and food.

For the most optimal results, you should choose seasoned hardwoods. Hardwoods are denser and burn longer, producing more heat per log compared to softwoods. They also tend to produce less creosote buildup in the chimney. Examples of hardwoods include oak, maple, hickory, and birch.

And what about the softwoods? Well, they’re fine to use, just do so sparingly. Pine, fir, spruce, and the like are less dense and will burn faster, providing quick heat, but not as much sustained warmth. They can also create more creosote, which isn’t ideal. Many start with softwoods to get the fire really going, then keep it maintained with hardwoods.

If you’re seasoning your own wood, you’ll know that you’re getting the best fuel possible. But if you’re purchasing wood, we recommend testing it with a moisture meter before making any final payments. Other signs of seasoned wood include: lightweight, makes a hollow sound when smacked against another piece, cracked ends, duller appearance, looser bark, no or minimal sap.
