Why Do I Need a Chimney Sweep & Inspection Every Year?

Virtually every fire safety organization in the U.S. strongly recommends annual chimney cleaning and inspection services to keep your structure safer and fully operational. Here’s why:

1. Remove flammable creosote

Creosote and other buildup can clog up for your flue, affecting draw and airflow, as well increasing the risk of chimney fires.

The techs at SureGlow Stove & Chimney hold certifications from the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and we have decades of collective experience. Rest assured, we understand your chimney inside and out. We use special brushes, vacuums and other tools to thoroughly remove creosote from the inside of your flue to significantly reduce the possibility of a disaster.

2. Remove obstructions

Like we said, creosote buildup can create an airflow obstruction, but it’s not the things that can do so. Various types of debris, such as leaves, twigs, small animal nests, and the small animals themselves can create all kinds of issues too.

If your chimney cap is damaged or you have other vulnerable spots, you’re much more prone to experience these things, all of which can hamper the drafting of smoke and allow dangerous carbon monoxide to back up into your home. When we clean and inspect your chimney, we’ll be sure to get everything out.

3. Prevent costly repairs

Annual inspections can help detect small issues before they become major problems. Cracks in the chimney liner, damaged bricks or mortar, and worn-out components can compromise the structural integrity of your chimney. Left unchecked, these problems can lead to costly repairs or even the need for a full chimney rebuild. By addressing minor issues early, you save time, money, and stress in the long run.

4. Ensure proper ventilation

When you light a fire, you want it to sufficiently heat your space. Weak flames and low heat output don’t enhance anyone’s fireside experience, and damages or clog can contribute to a low quality fire.

A clean and well-maintained chimney ensures that your fireplace or stove operates at peak performance, so that you get that warmth you deserve – and everyone stays as cozy and comfortable as possible.

5. Maintain compliance with safety standards

If you’re selling your home or making insurance claims related to fire or chimney damage, having a record of annual inspections can be invaluable. Many insurance companies and real estate agents recommend or require proof of professional chimney maintenance to ensure the safety of the property.

6. Protect your health

A neglected chimney can allow harmful substances, such as soot and carbon monoxide, to enter your living spaces. This can pose serious health risks to you and your family and create some big issues in terms of indoor air quality. Regular cleanings ensure proper drafting, so harmful byproducts are safely vented out of your home.

At SureGlow, our team is dedicated to keeping your home safer and your chimney in excellent condition. Whether it’s a routine sweep or a detailed inspection, we have the tools, expertise, and certifications to handle the job with precision and care. Don’t wait until a problem arises – schedule your chimney sweep and inspection today and enjoy peace of mind all year long!

What Are Signs My Masonry Chimney Needs Repair?

As chimneys age, their masonry structure can become unsound. Spalling bricks, crumbling mortar, gaps in the masonry, cracking, missing brickwork…all of these are signs that chimney masonry repair is needed.

What does this type of damage look like?

  • Spalling Bricks: Spalling bricks occur when water soaks into the masonry and freezes during colder months, causing the surface to crack, chip, or break apart. You might notice flaking or peeling on the brick or pieces of masonry near the chimney base.
  • Crumbling Mortar: The mortar between the bricks acts as a sort of glue holding your chimney together. Mortar that has turned to powder or is falling outneeds to be repaired – look for visible gaps or holes in the lines or loose bricks due to missing mortar.
  • Masonry Cracking: Cracking in the bricks or mortar is one of the most obvious signs of damage. Cracks can vary in size, appearing as thin, hairline cracks or larger, more visible splits, but any cracking, no matter its appearance, should be addressed swiftly.
  • Missing Bricks: When bricks become loose due to spalling or crumbling mortar, they may eventually fall out. This is usually pretty clear to spot, as it would leave noticeable gaps in the chimney structure. Look for empty spaces, as well as uneven or jagged areas.
  • Efflorescence & Discoloration: Efflorescence is a white, powdery residue that forms on the surface of bricks when water evaporates, leaving behind mineral deposits. Discoloration can also appear as dark stains or green patches (due to vegetation growth).
  • Leaning Chimney: A leaning or tilting chimney is one of the most serious signs of structural damage. If your chimney is visibly leaning away from the house, or if there’s any gaps between the chimney and the exterior walls of your home, don’t wait to call us in.
  • Water Damage Inside the Home: Chimney masonry damage doesn’t just affect the exterior – it can also lead to problems inside of your home. If you see water stains on the walls or ceilings near the chimney, peeling wallpaper, bubbling paint, or interior mold growth, your chimney could be leaking.

Don’t put off calling us in if you spot damage. Addressing masonry issues as soon as they appear can save you time, stress, and money in the long run. Left unattended, even minor problems can escalate, leading to extensive repairs, decreased chimney efficiency, and even safety hazards.

SureGlow can help with brick repair and replacement, tuckpointing, chimney rebuilding, parging services, chimney crown repairs, chimney cap or chase cover replacement, flashing repairs, and more.

For any chimney repair project, our CSIA-certified technicians have the skill and training to do it right the first time. A compromise in any chimney component could lead to problems, so we won’t cut corners. We also inspect for structural integrity after a chimney fire or when a home is being sold.
