Why Are Annual Chimney Sweeps & Inspections Important?

Annual chimney inspections are a must for keeping your chimney, stove, fireplace, or other heating appliance in optimal condition for the long haul. One of the first rules of chimney care is getting these overviews booked before lighting your first fire of the year – and preferably in the spring or summer months, so there’s ample time for any needed repair work.

The thing is, most homeowners won’t be able to spot issues in their flue, as they’re usually hidden away and unnoticeable until they start causing significant damage. Our knowledgeable techs know what to look for and can get a good look with our camera equipment, spotting small issues long before they turn into expensive-to-address hazards.

How Can SureGlow Help With Leaky Chimney Issues?

Water has been deemed by multiple industry experts as your chimney’s greatest enemy. And while we can address any damages done by leaks, we always believe prevention is the better option. Book any of the following services with us to avoid major damage down the line:

  • Chimney Waterproofing: Waterproofing services are always a must for masonry setups, as they ensure your brick and mortar can’t absorb harmful moisture. In addition, working with a pro guarantees the sealants are vapor-permeable, which is an important thing for your venting system.
  • Chimney Cap Installation: Why are chimney caps necessary? Lots of reasons. They protect against water entry, they keep out animals and debris, they prevent downdrafts from swooping into your home, and they can even serve as spark arrestors. A chimney without one is sure to suffer.
  • Chase Cover Installation: Chase covers typically fit over prefabricated chases, but they can be installed at the top of masonry chimneys too. These components work as a sort of metal crown, pushing water out and away from the sides of the chimney system, ensuring it stays as protected as possible.
  • Flashing Installation & Repair: Is water entering the spot where your roof and chimney meet? If so, you’re probably noticing water on the walls and ceiling surrounding your fireplace. Some quality (and properly installed) flashing should seal up the area, so any water is safely directed down your roof.

Don’t Skimp on Chimney Relining & Resurfacing Services

Your liner serves a few important purposes:

  1. It protects the surrounding walls from the heat of your fireplace.
  2. It keeps your masonry guarded against corrosive flue gases.
  3. It helps your system function more efficiently by safely directing smoke and fumes out of your fireplace.

If your chimney liner is in rough shape – or if you’re missing a liner altogether – having a new one installed or investing in necessary repairs services with a professional is a vital next step to take. In fact, you shouldn’t put your fireplace to use until this maintenance is done. Ask us about your options or if you might be a potential candidate for our HeatShield liner repair services.

We Offer Chimney Masonry & Stucco Repair Services

We offer things like tuckpointing, brick replacement, waterproofing, and crown repairs, all of which help to keep your system looking better, standing stronger, and free from harmful water intrusion.

Working with stucco? If there is a problem brewing, like water damage, these are some things that may be occurring:

  • A sudden appearance of chips and cracks in your stucco
  • Missing sections of stucco on the exterior of your chimney
  • Dark and damp spots on the interior or exterior of your home, or around or on the chimney itself

Also, keep in mind that water damage that is the result of a faulty stucco chimney may appear in areas that aren’t directly near the chimney. Widespread water damage may show up as dark spots or peeling around windows, doors, and near your house’s foundation.

If you suspect your stucco or masonry chimney is leaking, but you aren’t sure, you can call SureGlow and schedule a chimney inspection. One of our CSIA-certified technicians can examine your chimney and tell you whether or not it’s the source of your water damage.

What Is the Masonry Tuckpointing Process Like?

Tuckpointing is the process of removing old mortar joints and replacing them – and without occasional tuckpointing services, the inside of your masonry becomes exposed to the elements and will eventually deteriorate.

What are the steps in tuckpointing?

  1. Remove old mortar. Rather than simply applying new mortar paste to the old, we first must carve out every damaged joint. Utilizing specifically-designed tools, we’re able to get in there and only remove what is necessary, so that your chimney doesn’t shift or begin to collapse while we’re servicing it.
  2. Clean out the joints. After all the old stuff is out, we must clean off and prime the space for the new mortar. This ensures that the joints will be properly treated, so that they last for some time.
  3. Select the correct mortar. More than just choosing the right color combination to match your system, we examine the existing materials to ensure that the mortar we choose to tuckpoint with is similar in composition to what you have currently. Our goal during this step is to not only ensure that this new mortar will look nice, but also contain the correct ratios of adhesive properties and bonding agents, as well.
  4. Apply new mortar to the empty joints. It may seem like a simple procedure, smearing mortar into the cracks between bricks. However, this is not the case. It takes a true professional to know when, where, and how to pack in the mortar correctly, so that it both looks nice and remains functional
  5. Tool all new joints. “Tooling” is a term used to describe the process of ensuring the mortar is ergonomically shaped, so that water will be directed out and away, rather than encouraged to collect and pool between the bricks. If new mortar joints are not tooled correctly, it could significantly shorten the lifespan of your new and improved masonry.
  6. Let the materials cure. Many think that after a tuckpointing job is complete, all there is to do is simply let the mortar dry and the masonry is as good as new. However, if this new mortar hardens too quickly (or too slowly), it can negatively impact the entire tuckpointing job. This process can be a bit tricky, so it’s always best to leave it up to the professionals to ensure your chimney is properly treated.
