What Are Common Chimney Crown Damages?
The crown of a chimney is one of the most exposed areas of your chimney system. It sits at the very top of the chimney and is constructed of concrete. Unfortunately, because of its position out in the open, and due to things like the freeze/thaw process, this is one of the areas of a chimney that can experience a lot of damage.
What type of damage is common for chimney crowns?
- We normally find that the crown loosens around the edges, allowing water to seep down into the inner walls of the system.
- Another problem we often see are fine cracks that form throughout the concrete, much like those on sidewalks and driveways.
- Sometimes the surface of the crown begins to crumble or flake off, a process known as spalling.
- In some cases, we notice areas where water has pooled because the surface was constructed unevenly or has worn down over time.
- The freeze/thaw cycle frequently causes small cracks to grow larger as water freezes and expands.
- Occasionally, moss or algae grows on the crown due to constant exposure to moisture, which can further degrade the surface.
- If the crown is significantly damaged, it can shift and cause misalignment with the chimney flue.
If you’re concerned about the condition of your chimney crown, don’t wait to call us out. This component, along with your chimney cap, serves as the first line of defense against bad weather, animals, and outside debris. Swift repairs are essential – book online or call now.
Should I Waterproof My Chimney? Is This Important?
Water absorption is the number one cause of chimney damage – and our Midwestern climate is especially tough on chimneys. Rain, snow, and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on a masonry chimney, causing cracks in the mortar and other structural damage. For this reason, we recommend treating your chimney with an industry-grade water repellent.
Waterproofing your chimney is an investment in the long-term protection of your property. This investment will hopefully save you hundreds of dollars down the road in avoided damages, and when applied professionally, it should last for many years to come.
If you’re not sure where your chimney stands, don’t wait to call on us. The SureGlow crew can inspect your chimney and let you know if there’s a problem with the structure that may be causing leaks. Stopping chimney leaks is a big part of our comprehensive chimney and fireplace services, so give us a call or reach out online today.
What Does My Fireplace or Chimney Damper Do?
If you look at the anatomy of a fireplace, you’ll usually see that the damper is found at the top of the firebox. It’s the metal (normally cast iron) door that you lift up and down with the lever found in the top front of the firebox. This is known as a throat damper.
The purpose of the throat damper is to open the fireplace up to the outside to let smoke, gases, and fumes go up the chimney flue and out into the atmosphere. It is closed when the fireplace is not in use to keep your home’s heated or air conditioned air from escaping, as well as prevent downdrafts from entering.
What can go wrong with throat dampers? While these components are made of hearty material, like cast iron, they can warp from the heat and can also jump the track they ride on when used a lot over time. Both of these repairs often require replacement. When that happens, we recommend a different type of damper that can actually help you save on your energy bills – it’s called a top-sealing damper.
What is a top-sealing damper?
The top-sealing damper actually sits on top of the flue and, when shut tight, seals the flue off with a rubber-tight fit. When released, the damper springs up to let the fumes from your fireplace escape. The spring also acts like a screen, keeping critters out and flying embers in.
How does all that result in lower energy bills? When a throat damper is in place, the area from the top of the firebox to the top of the flue is cooled by the weather. That means it’s freezing when you are trying to heat your home. When sealed at the top, the air in the flue is the same as the air in your home and doesn’t fight against the heat.
If you need more information on what a top-sealing damper can do for you or need a repair on your current damper, call us here at SureGlow today.

Has Your Chimney Experienced Lightning Damage?
We don’t often think about the possibility of lightning hitting our chimney, but it does happen. Think about it – a chimney is usually the highest thing on a roof, so it can easily attract a direct strike. We’ve seen chimneys that have been hit and no one knew it had been damaged. We’ve also seen lightning take a chimney down.
If you think your chimney has been hit by lightning or feel no one has gone on the roof and inspected the crown recently enough, give SureGlow a call. We’ll make sure your system is functioning as safely as possible.
