When Should I Have My Chimney Inspected?
Before you burn anything in your chimney, you have to know that it’s safe for use. Chimney fires can quickly cause a lot of damage to your chimney, which then puts your entire household at risk. However, most chimney fires can be prevented with proper care and maintenance.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends annual chimney inspections and sweepings. At SureGlow, we encourage our customers to follow this practice, as well as invest in chimney inspections during the following scenarios:
- When you purchase a home with a chimney.
- When there has been an incident or natural disaster that may have caused structural damage.
- After experiencing a chimney fire.
- When you make changes to your heating appliance or ventilation system.
- Before and after you make any system repairs, upgrades, or fuel changes.
In addition, if you use your fireplace all year long or light frequent fires throughout your regular burning season, you may need two or three inspections and sweepings per year.
A SureGlow chimney professional can talk to you about the types of inspections and recommend which one is right for your home – and how many you should be booking yearly. All of our technicians are highly trained and qualified to perform all levels of chimney inspections. Reach out by phone or schedule an appointment online today.
What Are the Levels of Chimney Inspections?
There are three levels of chimney inspections:
- Level 1: A Level 1 chimney inspection is the most basic inspection. In this type of inspection, your chimney technician will examine all of the readily accessible parts of your chimney and ventilation system to check for damage. If you book inspections annually and use your fireplace the same way every year, this inspection is typically sufficient.
- Level 2: Level 2 chimney inspections will cover everything from a Level 1 inspection, but will also include inspection of accessible areas of the attic, crawlspace, and basement, as well as portions of the appliance and chimney connection. A Level 2 inspection will also include a video scan of the chimney interior.
- Level 3: Level 3 chimney inspections are the most intensive type of chimney inspection. In a Level 3 inspection, your chimney professional will need to access concealed areas of your chimney where hidden damage or hazards are suspected. This often requires the removal of chimney components or the surrounding drywall.
If our inspection reveals an issue with your chimney or fireplace system, count on our expertise for repairing, replacing, or rebuilding services. From the top of your flue to your firebox floor, there’s not much we can’t help you out with. Reach out today.

Need a Chimney Inspection for an Insurance Claim?
If you have had a chimney fire, natural disaster, or other incident that has caused damage to your chimney and you need to file an insurance claim, an inspection may be in order. We understand how to examine your chimney and make sure that the information is documented so that the insurance claim filing process can go as efficiently as possible.
Here are a few tips to remember when you need to file a claim:
- Keep excellent records. Since your chimney is part of your home, your homeowners insurance should cover certain types of accidental damage, such as a fire or sudden occurrence. Be sure to take many pictures with a digital camera and record them with the date and time stamp in the photo.
- Seek professional advice. Your insurance will require that your chimney is inspected, either by a representative of the insurance company or by a certified chimney professional. SureGlow is certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and our highly qualified technicians can provide all of the information that your insurance company will require.
- Protect yourself. Unfortunately, if a representative of the insurance company inspects your chimney and he or she finds evidence of neglect (such as a clogged flue), the insurance company may deny your claim and refuse to fund your repairs. It is in your best interest to have a chimney professional by your side to make sure that the inspection is fair and accurate.
This is another big reason why booking regular inspections – and keeping receipts of these – is important. This way, you’ll have ample evidence to prove that any damages are, in fact, out of your control and not a result of neglect on your part.
